TCIA Behavior Change Method

Our approach to behavior design

Select actionable target behavior

[Step 1]

The essence of successful change is always about changing the behavior of people.

The odds of goal completion are more than ten times as high when you’re able to translate a goal into actionable behavior. We start by deciding what it is that should change and clearly define the behavior required to reach this goal.

We ask ourselves the following questions: Who has to do what to reach the goal?

How often? How long and intensively… Where, when and with whom?

If possible stakeholders formulate a target behavior themselves, making sure it matches their capability, motivation and environment.

Understand how people come to decisions

[Step 2]

Behavior is all about decisions. If you know how people make decisions, you’re able to shape their behavior. Behavior (change) comes down to 3 factors: capacity, motivation and environment.

We start with research focused on deeply understanding the target audience. What motivates them? What is the ‘job-to-be-done’Our focus is on identifying what prompts the current behavior and what could trigger the new behavior. Understand the context and cues that lead to action, such as time of day, mood, or social situations.

Coming up with ideas that shape behavior

[Step 3]

People need both capability and motivation to shift to the desired behavior.

Find critical moments of opportunity These are specific moments where you make a choice that influences your behavior. For example, deciding whether to go to the gym after work or skip it and go home. Planning these decisions in advance, and not when they pop up during the day, will help to make consistent progress in reaching the goal.

Remove barriers: Identify and eliminate obstacles that make the desired behavior difficult. This could be done in many different ways. For example simplifying steps, reducing costs, or making the behavior more accessible.

Make it easy: Design the environment to make the new behavior the easiest choice. The best approach is not pushing someone into a desired behavior, but easing someone into it.

Turn ideas into interventions

[Step 4]

Boosting capability is a must have for every intervention. We focus on making the desired behavior as easy as possible, because ‘simplicity eats willpower for breakfast’.

Change the environment: Environment design is powerful because it influences how we engage with the world. By altering the physical or digital environment, we can increase your exposure to positive cues and reduce your exposure to negative ones. This will make the desired behavior easier to perform and the undesired behavior harder. We make sure the best choice is the most obvious one. Making a better decision is easy and natural when the cues are right in front of you.

Timing is important: it’s a crucial element in creating an influential context which triggers people to make a decision or take action toward their goal. Everyday decision points that seem small are critical moments of opportunity.

Test, learn
& improve

[Step 5]

Test and improve: we measure how well the audience is adopting the new behavior. By tracking behavior changes and collecting feedback to understand what’s working and what’s not, we will tweak the approach.

Sustain the change: Provide ongoing support and motivation to help maintain the new behavior.

We can tell you which
buttons to push...

It’s about how people actually think and behave, rather than what they say.

By unlocking behavioral insights you will be able to create better solutions. This understanding can have a significant impact on the bottom line.
